| University of Washington creates GLBT scholarship in David Kopay's name |
An endowment in the name of former University of Washington and NFL running back David Kopay, '64, will provide $5,000 (plus $5,000 in matching funds) to assist undergraduate students who are actively involved in organizations, programs or studies supporting the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender community.
Kopay, who played for the Huskies from 1961-63 and was a team co-captain his senior year, spent nine years in the NFL. He was the first professional athlete in major sports to reveal that he was Gay. He scored the only touchdown in the Huskies' 17-7 loss to Illinois in the 1964 Rose Bowl.
The scholarship was created in honor of his courage and with the goal of helping others avoid the discrimination that he faced.
