Anti-abortion foes confronted during annual protest on UW campus
Anti-abortion foes confronted during annual protest on UW campus
by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid - SGN A&E Writer

Coming onto the UW Campus to join the counter protest against a silent, but rather militantly anti-choice group that (according to a Radical Women member, shows up every year) on the campus, one could not help but see the reactions many students were having to the grisly, oversized photos of supposed 'murdered' fetuses. In fact, it can be said by those of us who held up signs asking why these people were not as concerned for living children or about deaths of soldiers or civilians in Iraq, that the gruesome photos did more to turn people away from the efforts of these hardliners than gain them support.

In fact, many women, and a few men even came over to where a campus chapter of Planned Parenthood, as well as a chapter of the Socialist Party had tables and inquired about joining similar protest actions against right wing protesters. Some thanked Radical Women members, who held signs aloft touting freedom of choice, for being on hand, and for protecting their rights to choose.

Even though the only mainstream media represent was the Seattle PI, many students and representatives from Senate candidate Aaron Dixon were on hand to not only silently challenge the pro-lifers, but also to -- at one point -- surround the small group with chants advocating freedom of choice.

For more information on other anti-war protests and on progressive candidate choices, call the Freedom Socialist Party/Radical Women at 206-722-6057 or Google groups such as Answer Seattle and the Socialist Worker's Party.
