| Seattle second only to San Francisco in population of gays, lesbians |

Seattle has the second largest population of people identifying as Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual among the 50 largest U.S. cities, according to a study by the Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation Law and Public Policy at the University of California, Los Angeles.
San Francisco tops the list with 15.4 percent versus Seattle's 12.9 percent (about 57,900 people). Atlanta was third with 12.8 percent and Minneapolis came in fourth with 12.5 percent. Only two cities west of the Mississippi - Boston and Atlanta - made the top ten, four of which were in California.
Census data and other information from the federal government were used to estimate the numbers. The census revealed that between 2000 and 2005 the number of same-sex couple households reported had risen by 30 percent.
However, the increase may not mean that there is an actual increase in the number of Gays, Lesbians or Bisexuals, but a greater willingness to disclose their sexual orientation during government surveys.
