The Fountain, by Darren Aronofsky, has an intriguing, complex story line and rich visual imagery and special effects. It takes place across the span of one thousand years: from the 1500s of Queen Isabella's Spain and the parallel period of the Ancient Mayan culture in Central America, to modern day 2006, to the fantastical space journeying of a Buddha-like 2600s man. The time frames weave together, keeping the viewer constantly piecing the puzzle pieces together to solve the mystery.
This film combines themes, such as magic, spirituality, immortality and the fountain of youth. Much of it is filmed with dark obscure lighting, lending to the mystery. There are lots of close ups, which are mesmerizing and give a sense of intimacy and immediacy to the viewer. This film quietly affected my subconscious and I was surprised that I left the theater in an altered state and was a little disoriented for awhile afterwards.
Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz are lovers through time. Jackman plays his role as Weisz's eternal lover with great emotion and desperate drive and devotion to her. By his own account, this is his most emotional performance to date. Previous Oscar-winner Weisz is poignant and beautiful.
This film is very unusual and awe-inspiring. I didn't know what to expect before seeing The Fountain. I found it quite beautiful, dreamy, unique, intelligent, well-made, thoughtful and definitely worth seeing.
