Best of Music 2006: Hot Artists of the Year
Best of Music 2006: Hot Artists of the Year
Selected by Albert Rodriguez, Lorelei Quenzer, Richard Kennedy, and Jessica Browning - SGN A&E Writers

THE HOTTEST ARTISTS WHO ROCKED IN 2006 (In Order)

1. Dixie Chicks
Call it the year's biggest comeback: after being disowned in 2003 by the nation's country radio stations for dissing the President way before it was popular, the band was all but forced to reinvent itself. The laugh is on the red states: the Chicks' first stab at writing their own songs led to five Grammy nominations, including album and record of the year, while their documentary Shut Up and Sing, was recognized by the National Board of Review. These strong, beautiful and talented women top our charts! (L. Quenzer)

2. Madonna
Another successful album and world tour for this Gay icon. Amidst ridiculous controversy over the adoption of her child she went on a media tour to explain herself and raise awareness for the plight of the children in AIDS-stricken African countries. (R. Kennedy)

3. Goldfrapp
This year, Goldfrapp took everyone for an incredible ride. Supernature is a perfect record and deserves every word of praise, and every dollar it reels in on licensing. (J. Browning)

4. Neko Case
Besides being a gifted musician and an alt country chanteuse, Tacoma native Neko Case is a gorgeous, tall redhead with tremendous stage confidence and a quirky sense of humor. Plus, in 2006 she released a career-best recording, Fox Confessor Brings the Flood. (A. Rodriguez)

5. Wolfmother
No other band has been able to pull off honoring their influences yet creating something altogether authentic and exciting in 2006. They are hard rocking naturals, without a hint of posing. (J. Browning)

6. Christina Aguilera
With the release of her third album, Aguilera has completely separated herself from the no-talent girl singers that ruled the charts when she came onto the scene. A clever mix of classic 60s soul and modern pop, she proves she definitely has class, talent and staying power. (R. Kennedy)

7. Scissor Sisters
It's incredibly hard to follow up a hugely successful debut album, but Jake Shears and company branched out musically, got a little wordier and promoted it with a hot tour. Intelligent, fun and sexy, the group is one of the hottest acts in the music scene. (R. Kennedy)

8. John Legend
R & B crooner John Legend won three Grammy Awards early in 2006, received two more Grammy nominations at year's end, and looked damn sexy through it all. His shirtless appearance in the "Save Room" music video really got our hearts thumping. (A. Rodriguez)

9. Jamie Cullum
His last album, Catching Tales, has been on Billboard's Contemporary Jazz list for sixty weeks, and the British wunderkind of crossover appeal has been all over Seattle's airwaves this year. Two sold out shows in 2006, at opposite ends of his US tour, made a mark for the pianist and pop singer, who calls Seattle one of his favorite places to perform. (L. Quenzer)

10. Jennifer Hudson
It's a little premature to say that this "American Idol" finalist (Season 3, 2004) is a breakthrough artist in 2006- she just signed a record deal with Clive Davis and Arista Records and will begin recording her first album in January - but her knockout performance as Effie in Dreamgirls already has huge Oscar buzz. Merry Christmas, Ms. Hudson! (L. Quenzer)
