Best of Music 2006: Albums/CDs
Best of Music 2006: Albums/CDs
Selected by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

BEST ALBUMS / CDs (In Order)

1. Fox Confessor Brings the Flood - Neko Case
Neko Case writes stories about scandalous murders, people going crazy, lovers reflecting on the good ole days, and even brides packing Valium, and she does so with a voice that could make an angel jealous. The backdrop of "Dirty Knife", the twang of "Hold On, Hold On" and the gospel shine of "John Saw That Number" made this album the one to beat since its springtime release.

2. With Love and Squalor - We Are Scientists
Nearly every rock band wants to cash in on the punk-pop sound these days, but We Are Scientists tower above them all. Their startling debut is a bag full of catchy, guitar-riffed, sex-tinged ear candy that deserves as much attention as the one by their touring companions, Arctic Monkeys.

3. Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not - Arctic Monkeys
Not since The Clash has a band received as much hype and attention as Sheffield, England's homeboys Arctic Monkeys. Raw and loud, and far brilliant than what we initially expected, the very young punk quartet have a promising future if they can keep the egos in check.

4. Carnavas - Silversun Pickups
You could easily draw comparisons of Silversun Pickups to the Smashing Pumpkins, but that wouldn't be fair. Songs like "Well Thought Out Twinkles", "Lazy Eye", and "Rusty Wheel" are simply too good to pass up. The California-based foursome will definitely see their star rise.

5. Wolfmother - Wolfmother
At a time when rock bands are beginning to sound the same, Australian trio Wolfmother did something different. Very different. In the spirit of Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and Pink Floyd, the boys from down under reinvented psychedelic rock for a whole new generation.

6. The Eraser - Thom Yorke
Weird and beautiful, political and deep, and dramatic throughout, Thom Yorke's first solo venture is the long lost B-side recording of Radiohead's OK Computer and Kid A. The piano finale on "Analyse" is creepy and gorgeous all at once, and enough reason to buy into the whole album.

7. Taking the Long Way - Dixie Chicks
Dixie Chicks took the frustration and negative energy thrown at them by conservative yahoos and turned it around to produce a startling, in-your-face album that could possibly go down in history as one of the best country recordings of all time.

8. Everything All the Time - Band of Horses
Seattle-based trio Band of Horses put themselves on the map with this valiant debut effort, containing the standout singles, "The Funeral" and "The Great Salt Lake". But the best track is the fiery "Wicked Gil", the should-have-been-released single of 2006.

9. We Were Here - Joshua Radin
A quiet, lush pop-folk album reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkel, James Taylor, and Elliott Smith is the work of the newest singer-songwriter on the block, Joshua Radin. There's no denying this guy has the potential to be huge, evidenced on this marvelous debut.

10. Cansei De Ser Sexy - CSS
Brazilian house-punk outfit CSS, which stands for tired of being sexy, gave the dance world the juiciest set of tracks this side of Basement Jaxx's Remedy. "Music is My Hot Hot Sex" is a must-hear tune that will easily steam up your windows, with proper company of course.

(11-25, in random order):
Nashville - Solomon Burke, Broken Boy Soldiers - The Raconteurs, Bang Bang Rock & Roll - Art Brut, A Piano: The Collection - Tori Amos, Subtitulo - Josh Rouse, Youth - Matisyahu, Futuresex/Lovesounds - Justin Timberlake, Modern Times - Bob Dylan, Long Trip Alone - Dierks Bentley, Half the Perfect World - Madeleine Peyroux, El Perro Del Mar - El Perro Del Mar, Supernature - Goldfrapp, Black Holes and Revelations - Muse, First Impressions of Earth - The Strokes, Continuum - John Mayer
