Now playing everywhere

After watching the news the other night, and finally turning the channel after the mention of yet another spate of shootings and a bestiality trial, I had to reflect that these are indeed, challenging times. What's a true romantic to do? Well, if you're as overwhelmed as I have been, then, you might just catch The Holiday, a sweetly sexy romantic comedy starring Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz as a pair of urban singles who trade houses, cities and countries; to give themselves a break from their disastrous love lives.

Winslet has just found out that the man she's been obsessing about for three years (handsome, but sleazy, Rufus Sewell), is getting married and Diaz has forced the confession out of her cad of a live-in lover (Edward Burns), that he slept with his receptionist. Thus, both are in desperate need of a change of pace, so, both pack it up, grab planes and head for the others' city. In Diaz' case, she heads to London and Winslet to glamorous L.A. And, of course--so unlike real life--both meet hunky, decent guys who adore them and heal their broken hearts (Jude Law and Jack Black), while showing them another, better side of life.

Those of who demand more grounded, realistic stories, or who are stuck in their own misery over broken romances, probably won't like this film, but, if you give The Holiday a chance, it'll charm the gloom away. Promise. Oh, and there's a delightful, though not completely well thought-out storyline that involves Winslet helping Diaz' neighbor, Eli Wallach, a retired film executive from the golden years of Hollywood, prepare for a pivotal tribute. All in all, its a great film and darned funny at times, which is as good as anything else coming out of violence prone Hollywood lately.
