Not so best films of 2006: The disappointments
Not so best films of 2006: The disappointments
by Lorelei Quenzer - SGN A&E Writer

Wow. Maybe I'm just a meanie, but this list was wa-a-a-y easier to compile than my top 10. I'm usually a big fan - especially of numbers 1-3 - so rest assured, these flops haven't turned me off of movies yet. Just be careful in 2007, okay?

1. For Your Consideration (Directed by Christopher Guest, starring Catherine O' Hara, Parker Posey, Harry Shearer)
Could it be that funnyman Christopher Guest has drawn from the mock-umentary well one time too many? I loves me some Hollywood spoofin', but FYC petered out at the end when it should have gone to 11. I walked out shaking my head.

2. Curse of the Golden Flower (Directed by Zhang Yimou, starring Chow Yun-Fat, Gong Li)
After delivering great martial arts epics like Hero and House of Flying Daggers I'm not sure Zhang's latest had a chance of meeting my expectations. Unfortunately the grand spectacle and gorgeous cinematography could not stop me from giggling through Gong Li's soap opera-esque theatrics.

3. The Last Kiss (Directed by Tony Goldwyn, starring Zach Braff, Jacinda Barrett)
Part of the problem was I'd walked in thinking this was Zach Braff's follow-up to Garden State, both thematically and as a director. But once I got over it, I discovered that I haven't wanted to slap someone so hard since Scarlett Johansson moped her way through Japan in Lost in Translation.

4 Running With Scissors (Directed by Ryan Murphy, starring Joseph Fiennes, Annette Bening, Brian Cox)
With this cast, Running should have been in my top ten. But the studios marketed this downer as a neurotic comedy, and even Bening's compelling performance as a paranoid schizophrenic couldn't revive it.

5. Tristan + Isolde (Directed by Kevin Reynolds, starring James Franco, Sophia Myles)
What the fuck is that "+" sign supposed to mean? Has the ampersand gone on strike and no one circulated the memo? Or, are we having delusions of Baz Luhrmann? Hmph. Well, that's it. I wasn't all that disappointed, since I half expected it to be dreck when I walked in. I just needed to rant about the title.
