Jump on the bandwagon: Eight artists to watch for in 2007
Every new year comes with a fresh crop of talented artists in search of their musical breakthrough. Here are eight newcomers with strong potential to finish ahead of the pack in 2007.

Jason Aldean - Mamas, please let your babies grow up to be cowboys. Especially if they grow up looking like Jason Aldean. The hunky Georgian is off to an awesome start in 2007 with a #1 music video ("Amarillo Sky") on CMT and booked to open concert dates this spring for platinum-selling trio Rascal Flatts, including a night of boot kickin' at the Tacoma Dome on March 4. Aldean, an Academy of Country Music nominee whose first gig was at a VFW hall when he was 14, is poised to be the next Tim McGraw or Brad Paisley. Brett Dennen - At Bumbershoot last year, you may have come across a tall, broad-shouldered, bespectacled redhead named Brett Dennen. The Northern Californian brought his special blend of acoustic guitar-driven music (think Jack Johnson without the flip-flops), and the assembled packed crowd loved every minute of it. Some of them even boogied below the stage. Opening dates for John Mayer and Sheryl Crow, at Mayer's request, last fall helped introduce Dennen to a throng of pop-rock listeners. He's on the solo trail right now with a Seattle concert scheduled for March 11 at Chop Suey. Ear-sample tracks by Brett Dennen at www.myspace.com/brettdennen.

El Perro Del Mar - Forget Abba, the newest sensation to come from Sweden is pop chanteuse El Perro Del Mar. With a voice that recalls a younger Kate Bush, this brown-eyed beauty will make instant fans with her lush, string-laced songs "God Knows" (SGN's Top Ten Tracks/Singles, 2006) and "Coming Down the Hill". An initial US tour is set for spring, which includes a date in Seattle as the headliner for KEXP cutie John Richard's birthday party at Neumos on March 9. Geisha Girls - Somewhere between The Cure, Arctic Monkeys, B52's and The Clash, you'll find Southern California trio Geisha Girls. The upstart threesome go for a raw punk sound, with a touch of 80s synth-rock, on their full-length debut entitled Disappearing Act. Comprised of Shawn Robert (vocals, bass), John Roller (guitars), and Mike Shelbourn (drums), Geisha Girls will introduce edgy tunes like "Skinny Wrists" and "In the Monotone" to West Coast residents beginning next month, but thus far no Seattle date has been announced. Ear-sample tracks by Geisha Girls at www.myspace.com/geishagirls.

Albert Hammond, Jr. - The first member to break out from highly touted rock band The Strokes is guitarist Albert Hammond, Jr. His debut solo project, Yours to Keep, has been given the thumbs-up treatment overseas since its late 2006 release. Stateside, the album hits store shelves on March 6. Hammond, Jr. completes a five-week tour with Incubus next month and then embarks on a headlining trek that returns him to Seattle on March 2, at The Crocodile Café. Jennifer Hudson - Now that the Academy Award nominations have been announced, Jennifer Hudson can begin narrowing down her wardrobe choices, get her boyfriend fitted for a tux, and write the acceptance speech for that Best Supporting Actress statue. Looking beyond the Oscars, Hudson will record her debut album this year for Arista Records with a possible fall or early winter release date. If you can't wait, the former Idolette can be heard on the Dreamgirls movie soundtrack.

Joshua Radin - Showing signs that he may have slept with a stack of Simon and Garfunkel 45's under his pillow, singer-songwriter Joshua Radin is set to be the next great pop folkie. His debut We Were Here (SGN's Top Ten Albums/CDs, 2006) is a collection of sweet, genuine love songs that have been featured on popular TV shows like "Scrubs", "One Tree Hill", and "Brothers and Sisters". A recent appearance on "Last Call with Carson Daly" and included on the upcoming Catch & Release film soundtrack, Radin is headed for a banner year. He performs at The Triple Door on February 13. Ear-sample tracks by Joshua Radin on his website, www.joshuaradin.com.

Silversun Pickups - It's a bit of a surprise that Silversun Pickups haven't become a household name yet. But that could change in 2007. The alternative rock quartet, who lives within a mile of each other in Southern California, will undoubtedly see greener pastures this year with heavier airplay on mainstream radio stations and increased rotation on MTV. The group will promote music from Carnavas (SGN's Top Ten Albums/CDs, 2006) on a national tour with Snow Patrol this spring, with a stop at Key Arena on February 27. Ear-sample tracks by Silversun Pickups at www.silversunpickups.com.
