WASHINGTON - The Human Rights Campaign today mourns the death of 72-year old Detroit resident Andrew Anthos who was attacked last week outside of his apartment and subsequently died of his injuries. The Human Rights Campaign is partnering with the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force to pay for the funeral expenses for Anthos. "We are deeply saddened that Mr. Anthos, a member of our community, has died. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family," said HRC President Joe Solmonese. "This brutal crime is senseless, infuriating and deeply saddening - no one deserves to die this way." The attack occurred last week on Feb. 13, when Anthos was riding on a city bus and was asked by a fellow passenger if he was gay. The man then followed Anthos off the bus which stopped in front of Anthos' building where the assailant then beat him with a metal pipe. "It is clear that Mr. Anthos was attacked simply for being gay and we urge the local law enforcement to pursue this case vigorously and bring justice to this heinous crime. This attack and subsequent murder cannot go unpunished," added Solmonese. "The Human Rights Campaign is ready to stand shoulder to shoulder with Michigan Equality and Triangle Foundation as this case moves forward and justice is served." The Human Rights Campaign is America's largest civil rights organization working to achieve gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality.
