Let's be honest. Will Ferrell's track record since leaving Saturday Night Live has been spotty at best.
I went into Blades of Glory expecting to see 15 minutes of corn lodged in a 90-minute long turd. Being a huge figure skating queen, I braced myself for the impending disappointment&And I was so happy to be wrong.
Blades of Glory was consistently funny and well-paced, with surprisingly strong supporting performances, particularly from SNL alum Amy Poehler.
There are some great bits with actual skaters, including four Olympic Gold Medalists, one of whom actually sniffs a jock strap.
Will Ferrell was pretty much Will Ferrell, and this time it works! Jon Heder was excellent. His hair and the costumes alone are worth the price of admission. But don't take my word for it. The audience response was overwhelmingly positive, including spontaneous applause at the end. How often does that happen?
So, was it high art? No. It was a comedy, and a whole lot of fun. If you're a skating fan, it's worth full price. If you just like it campy and ridiculous, catch a matinee. And absolutely no one should miss this in DVD.
