Film, talk celebrate International Women's Month
Film, talk celebrate International Women's Month
by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid - SGN A&E Writer

With a forties themed dinner, and lively discussion, last Thursday's film and discussion at New Freeway Hall was a definite winner. Shown on March 15th, the film Good Work, Sister: Women Shipyard Workers Of World War II gave those gathered a chance to learn more about the real 'Rosie the Riveters', those women who took over non-traditional jobs when men went to fight overseas in WWII.

Full of humorous anecdotes from the women who worked in one of the shipyards, and footage of some of the women doing what were then considered 'men's jobs'. But even more enlightening and interesting was the live testimony of what it was like to work at the Boeing plant during this period, by one of Radical Women's members, Ann Rogers. She told of being among a large group of workers, most of whom supported women working beside them, and how it felt to be given pink slips when the men returned from war to take back their jobs.

After the film and Rogers' talk, audience members, many of them RW members, or those interested in Socialism and change, asked questions and applauded the work of those women who'd gone before, including Rogers.
