Where It's At
Sarah Vowell brings hilarious and biting spoken word to Moore Theatre
by Richard Kennedy - SGN A&E Writer

Sarah Vowell
Saturday, March 31 - 8pm
Moore Theatre - $28.50-$73.50

Given pretty much everyone's' frustration with the current political climate, you might find a performance by Sarah Vowell more than welcoming. Tying wit, politics, sharp social commentary and her unique style of sarcasm, Vowell entertains, enlightens, and most importantly commiserates with her audience. She is that strange nerdy girl, marching to her own tune that gay guys were fascinated with in high school.

Vowell is probably best known for her spoken word on NPR's "This American Life." She also writes for numerous publications and tours her monologues around the country. In a previous visit to Seattle, she appeared alongside gay author David Sedaris. If you are a fan of his work but not familiar with Vowell's, then you should definitely give her a listen. Like Sedaris, she is able to weave hilarious stories from interactions with her family and environment, but Vowell goes one step further by working historical and political perspective, without ever going into a preachy arena.

Vowell has branched out the past few years. She released an enthralling, but wacky, book entitled "Assassination Vacation", which chronicles her pilgrimage to the sites and memorials of three assassinated presidents. As always, she injects the political history of Lincoln, Garfield and McKinley in with her witty and macabre style. Vowell says of the place that Lincoln was shot; "Going to Ford's Theatre to see a play is like going to Hooter's for the food." She also played the voice of teenage superhero Violet in the animated film The Incredibles. On television, you can often catch her on Conan, Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report.

Grab a drink in the bar downstairs before the show or hit Sonya's, Belltown's only gay bar at First and Stewart. Ticket information is at www.ticketmaster.com or Paramount and Moore box offices. R. Kennedy

Artist Essentials: Check out Vowell's books "Assassination Vacation" and "The Partly Cloudy Patriot." Also, try "This American Life" on CD or in the archives at www.thislife.org.
