Norwescon: Over-the-top fandom fun for all
Norwescon: Over-the-top fandom fun for all
by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid - SGN A&E Writer

Norwescon 30
April 5-8th
Doubletree Hotel/SeaTac

If Norwescon had a sound this year, its 30th year, that sound would have been loud. The sound of laughter, as old friends chatted it up over dinner, or milling around before and after the Masquerade, (which could be truly said to be their best ever, in this writers opinion), and shaking that groove thing at several room parties. But there were quiet places to hang out too, if you just wanted to regroup, and figure out a plan of attack for the next several hours.

Thats what a lot of us were doing on Sunday, after raising the roof at either the Biohazard party (my favorite--read more about this on my blog under Lipstick and Lust) or the Merchants of Deva party, or one of several others. So, one could see elves, faeries, folks dressed in Star Wars gear, manga fans, all mingling, or chatting over memories old and new, all over the suddenly transformed environs of the Doubletree hotel at Sea-Tac. And believe me, if ever there was a great year for costumes, complicated and simple, but elegant, this was that year. This was evidenced by the skill shown in the winners of this years Masquerade, the costume contest for pros and beginners to show off their skills in stitching magic.

My fave moment (besides the choreographed, spontaneous dance I did with an Asian version of Aquaman) was the panel on serial books, which featured two well-spoken authors talking about how to navigate your readers through the universes you have created. The room, which was packed, boasted an equally well-spoken audience, some of whom were on their own first novels. I also ducked into a panel on creating eleven characters, before chatting it up with a fellow writer on a new idea that just hasnt made it to computer screen or paper yet.

In all, it was a weekend worthy of many diary pages (and blog pages!) that only makes me long for the next convention, and for Norwescon 31.
