The White Stripes coming to Seattle for two nights in September
Rock and roll son of a gun Jack White is headed here this fall for two just-announced performances at the Paramount Theatre. He and Meg White, better known as Grammy-winning duo The White Stripes, will play September 26 and 27 in Seattle. Tickets tentatively go on sale in mid-June. However, a special pre-sale will be announced soon via the pair's official website (www.whitestripes.com). The Detroit-formed unit will introduce fans to fresh material from their upcoming album, Icky Thump. Jack White, who dated Renee Zellweger and helped produce Loretta Lynn's sensational Van Lear Rose recording, divides time between The White Stripes and his other band, The Raconteurs. You can definitely expect coverage of The White Stripes in September right here in the Seattle Gay News.
The Killers, Mute Math, Hot Hot Heat, The Reason best in show at Virgin Festival
The inaugural Virgin Festival in Vancouver is now in the record books. Over 40 rock bands, DJs, and individual performers from the US and Canada took part in the two-day event, held on the campus of the University of British Columbia on May 20 and 21. Things got off to a muddy start when pouring rain greeted concertgoers on the first day of the mega music festival, an expansion of similar super-sized concerts in London, Baltimore, and Toronto. Not only was it soggy, but it was also damn cold. Yet, that didn't dampen the spirits of those who arrived at the festival to see and hear artists like My Chemical Romance, Rise Against, Stars of Track and Field, and my personal favorite on Sunday's roster, Mute Math. I've never really been interested in Mute Math, an experimental rock quartet from New Orleans, but I'll certainly pay attention now. They were wild, weird and fun.
Warm weather and sunny skies brought more people out to V-Fest on Monday, not to mention thousands of fans wanting to see headlining act The Killers. After two canceled performances, including Seattle, it was rumored The Killers might possibly be a no-show in Vancouver. But early in the afternoon, the Las Vegas-based group said they were ready to play. And they climaxed the event with a very impressive, colorful performance that had everyone dancing and singing along from start to finish. They sounded really, really good. Canadian rockers Hot Hot Heat also sounded great, playing to a packed audience hours before The Killers took the stage. Finally, Hamilton, Ontario-based quintet The Reason invited me backstage after they delighted V-Festers on a side stage. Band members Jeremy Widerman and Kam Bordignon can't wait to be signed to a US record label and tour the States. Open-minded and Gay supportive (they think the US government's stance on Gay marriage is ridiculous), Widerman and Bordignon were a bonus treat to my already sweet experience at the Virgin Festival. Listen to The Reason's music at www.myspace.com/thereasonrock, primarily the track "All I Ever Wanted".
The Killers reschedule WaMu Theater show to May 27
Brandon Flowers was a sick little cowboy. The lead singer of super group The Killers was diagnosed with bronchitis a week ago, forcing the cancellation of two shows including a May 20 appearance at Seattle's WaMu Theater. Fortunately, Flowers has recovered and the concert has been rescheduled for Sunday, May 27. Tickets for last weekend's WaMu gig will be honored, and remaining tickets are available for purchase at all Ticketmaster locations. Opening for The Killers is Louis XIV. Besides hearing and dancing to Killers hits on Sunday, like "Somebody Told Me", "When You Were Y0ung", "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine", and "Bones", you can watch Brandon Flowers strut his stuff all night long - he wears tight dress pants and is sporting a South of the Border moustache (ay, carumba!) - so drool away. Get tickets ASAP, and remember that Monday is a holiday - so party the night before with The Killers!
Beer consumption, lost ID cards, dirty fun with Test Your Reflex and The Bravery
Two rock bands. Three bars. Five beers. One lost ID card. That's how I spent the night of May 16. Shortly after Test Your Reflex's booming set at El Corazon, my friend and I were escorted to the band's dressing room by lead singer Ryan Levine. Unfortunately, it was an alcohol-free zone. But Levine and bassist Agustin Sanchez had already invited us to hang out with them and The Bravery, who gave an equally energetic performance at the venue, formally known as Graceland. Skip to my friend and I drinking beers inside TYR's tour van, listening exclusively to a just-recorded cover of "Ava Adore" for a Smashing Pumpkins tribute album out soon. We then headed to the Cha Cha Lounge for more cocktails, though Levine couldn't get into the club because he'd lost his photo ID card when he crossed the Canadian border the night before. Luckily, keyboardist Andrew Ampaya found it (mysteriously) in the trash bucket and Levine was allowed to join us at the bar. By the way, Levine was breaking in a new pair of underwear, purchased at American Apparel on Capitol Hill. Sam Endicott of The Bravery, who interviewed with Seattle Gay News two weeks ago, told a hilarious story involving his big rock star package. It provided me a valid excuse to look down at his crotch. We all ended the night, or early morning to be exact, at an Irish pub on Olive. And I awoke the next day, miraculously, with no hangover.

The one. The only.
Solo rocker, former Soundgarden lead singer, and Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell is our very special guest in "The Music Lounge" next week. The Seattle native, now splitting residencies between Los Angeles and Paris, talks passionately about his family, new album, and the old days of hanging out on Capitol Hill. Cornell claims that the soon-to-be released solo effort, Carry On, is his most personal work to date.
Grab a copy of the Seattle Gay News on June 1 when local rock legend and two-time Grammy winner Chris Cornell opens up to us in "The Music Lounge".
