Softball races tighten up for ECSA
by Nick Bowen - SGN Contributing Writer

As the ECSA softball league finishes its first month of play season races for the league lead, and the coveted World Series berths, tightened. On a windy day dark with clouds and a steady light rain, the teams took the fields and battled the elements as much as the other teams to keep the top spots in each division.

In the 'C division the Blue Sox handled Jerry's Kids to come away with a win, and stay unbeaten at 5 - 0. The controversy of the day came as with a 12 run lead over the unbeaten Bulldog squad, the rain got heavy and the game was called by the umpires and washed away what looked like a sure win for the Blue Sox. With this game as a rain out, the Bulldogs stayed unbeaten as well at 4 - 0.

In the 'D' division play began with two teams with identical 5 - 0 records leading in the standings, but with 4 teams still unbeaten. In an early game of undefeated teams the Tsunami took the field against the Rockets. The Rockets with 4 wins and no losses on the season took the lead early and never looked back. The Rockets banged out hit after hit, to take the game by a final score of 23 - 3. The other 5 - 0 team the Drillers had a match up with the only other unbeaten team the Pirates, and came out with a similar result falling to the division champs from last year by a final of 16 - 4. The Pirates also took a game from the Eclipse winning by 5 to move into first place in the division with a record of 6 wins and no losses. This sets up what is sure to be a great game June 3rd when the unbeaten Rockets will face the unbeaten Pirates for sole possession of first place in the division.

In the Open 'B' division the Shock met the Pilots for the second time this year, with the Pilots coming up on the winning end of the second one run contest between these two team so far this year. This game came down to the wire with the Shock holding on to the lead and the Shock unable to tie the game in the home half of the last inning.

Then the rains came. Including the crucial match between the Blue Sox and the Bulldogs all 3 divisions had play suspended and the late games were canceled. Rained out games will most likely be made up on Saturday June 9th, exact times to be determined by the league.
