Vice President's Lesbian daughter gives birth to son
Vice President's Lesbian daughter gives birth to son
by Robert Raketty - SGN Staff Writer

Mary Cheney, the openly Lesbian daughter of Vice President Dick Cheney, gave birth to a son at Sibley Hospital in Washington D.C. at 9:46 a.m. on Wednesday, May 23. Samuel David Cheney, the sixth grandchild of Dick and Lynne Cheney, weighed-in at 8 pounds, 6 ounces.

"We wish the family the best..." said Jennifer Chrisler, Executive Director of Family Pride, a national advocacy group for LGBT families. "Vice President Cheney's newborn grandson and his two mothers put yet another face on our families for the American public"

Cheney's announcement last December about her pregnancy provoked the ire of conservatives and became political folly for liberals who used the opportunity to expose the perceived hypocrisy of the Republican Party.

"This is a baby," said Cheney during a speech at Barnard College in February. "This is a blessing from God. It is not a political statement. It is not a prop to be used in a debate by people on either side of an issue. It is my child."

The Republican Party has long been seen as a foe of LGBT equality. The Bush Administration has opposed pro-Gay legislation and even supported a constitutional amendment to ban Gay marriage. Vice President Cheney, while backing Bush's decisions, has been less enthusiastic.

Marriage is a matter that should be left up to the states, said Vice President Cheney during the 2004 election season, and "people ought to be free to enter into any kind of relationship they want to."

CNN's Wolf Blitzer asked Vice President Cheney in January about his daughter's pregnancy; however he refused to discuss the matter publicly, saying the question was "over the line."

Cheney and her longtime partner Heather Poe, who have been together for 15 years, live in Great Falls, Virginia. Under state law, Poe will have no legal rights to the child and cannot be considered a co-parent.

Cheney is vice president for consumer advocacy at AOL, while Poe is a former park ranger.
