Majestics brutalize Tucson Moon - IWFL teams sparred off at Memorial Stadium
Majestics brutalize Tucson Moon - IWFL teams sparred off at Memorial Stadium
by Que Areste and Sandi Edwards - SGN Contributing Writers

The Seattle Majestics' second game of the season Saturday May 26, first at the Seattle Center's Memorial Stadium, was another strong performance on both sides of the ball. The score 53-6 was over a out manned and out gunned Tucson Moon.

The Majestics' offense seemed to score at will. The running back star of the game, Kam Warner could not be stopped whether running inside behind great offensive line play or using her individual speed to sweep to the outside. Warner, Crystal Sanderson and Rachel Gore had running touchdowns. Whether it was a running back, tight end, wide receiver or the quarterback, all had patience in waiting for the blockers to find their mark. Mugs Louden, Lisa Tavarez, Gail Poulin and Kia Neal also gave the defense more than they could handle. Starting quarterback Michel Volk found a multitude of receivers. Camille Head, Heather Gallemore, Warner Taverez and Gretchen Pietras all found a way to make yards after the catch.

Majestics' played their substitutes in the fourth quarter and it made little difference. Gore, substitute quarterback scored on a bootleg while outrunning the Moon defense. The defense held the Moon to under 50 yards of total offense. The only Moon score came on a fourth down sideline steak pass.

The defense had shifted into a last minute coverage package and did not get over into the coverage that was called. Even with injuries to Kasey Rivas linebacker, the defensive quickly found the ball, stopping runs by disrupting the hand off. Time after time hard hitting Gail Pitman, Rivas, Gallemore and Tavarez, kept the Moon from obtaining any momentum.

The Moon's highlights included the touchdown and two interceptions. Some of the people in the stands who had questions about the "NFL" rules and the IWFL were educated on the hard hitting style of this new league. They were also impressed, with the Majestics' caliber of offensive knowledge

My 18 year old former high school football player son came to his first Majestics' game. He had wondered if women playing football would tackle hard. His comment was "Wow! these women really hit!" He even bought a Majestics' T-shirt.

There is an open invitation for all pure sport fans to join the Majestic Saturday June 2nd at Memorial Stadium. See you there at 7pm.
