Hedwig & The Angry Inch:
A Benefit for Freedom To Marry
Sunday, June 24- 7pm
Neumos - $16

There's no better way to wrap up Pride weekend than with the story of hope, glamour, and self-realization that is Hedwig & The Angry Inch. It's produced by Tacoma's Horatio Theater and a benefit for the very best of causes, Freedom to Marry. Neumo's is hosting this glam-rock musical extravaganza on Sunday night as a part of Pride's weekend-long celebration.

Hedwig has developed quite a Rocky Horror-esque cult following over the years, premiering in 1998 as an off-Broadway musical. The story begins in East Berlin with young Hansel, who falls for a US soldier and decides to undergo a sex-change operation in order to marry and start a new life with him in America. The operation is botched, leaving our transgendered hero, now "Hedwig", with an unfortunate and not quite functional "angry inch" of scar between her legs. Not so easily discouraged, romantic Hedwig reinvents herself as a glam-rock icon with a backing band dubbed The Angry Inch.

Fame, fortune, and love are elusive but always at the forefront of Hedwig's aspirations. Written by John Cameron Mitchell (Shortbus) with music and lyrics by Steven Trask, the production met with a new generation of exposure and interest through the 2001 film version. The movie won Best Director and Audience Awards at Sundance in the year of its release, in part due to the fantastic cast and artful representation of the androgynous 70's through the unfolding trials and tribulations of Hedwig and her various romantic interests.

The Seattle production features Rusty Jones as Hedwig, and Hedwig's second spouse and drag queen bandmate Yitzhak is played by Jonnie Moore. Appearing as The Angry Inch are "Eastern bloc rock ambassadors" Jacek (Kenny Alton); on drums, Schlatko (Devon Rocketship); on guitar, Krzysztof (Pondscum); and musical director, Skszp (Patrick MacKinnon).

Previous performances in Tacoma and a warm-up engagement at West Seattle's Skylark have sparked some major excitement. Get out there and support this unique and important production while supporting Freedom To Marry as well!
