Fremont Solstice Parade/Fair
Fremont/Gasworks Park
June 16-17
By the time my friend and I got to Fremont for the Solstice Parade--the official kick-off of Summer in the Northwest--the 'nude bicyclists' had put their clothes back on and only a little telltale body paint peeking out of collars and sleeves let us know who they were. Still, the many floats and marchers that followed were a welcome compensation.
Ranging from an Egyptian themed group, to several sustainable energy floats and individuals dressed in colorful regalia, the parade went on long enough to make watchers think several times that it was over. But more groups of colorfully clad marchers brought up the rear, including the 'Super Huggers' dressed in red, 'Queen of Hearts' outfits and giving hugs to all who would partake. And of course there was lots of music and partial nudity, even at Gasworks Park, where the parade ended and one part of the Solstice Festival began.
