The Can Can's weekly cabaret / burlesque show Cabagazm at the Triple Door
The Can Can's weekly cabaret / burlesque show Cabagazm at the Triple Door
By E. Joyce Glasgow - SGN A&E Writer

Provocateur: Cabagazms Cabaresque Show
July 26th, The Triple Door

The Can Can brought its wild and woolly burlesque variety show to stretch out on the beautiful stage at the Triple Door last Thursday, for two sold out shows.

One highlight of the evening was the one and only Baby Gramps, who used the adult nature of the show as an opportunity to sing some of his sexy and silly songs such as the hysterical Scrotum, a sing-along, which is self-explanatory and The Sexual Life of a Camel, which tells the story of an un-consummated tryst between a camel and the Egyptian Sphinx.

Ultra, a drag oriented performance artist, was terrific, as usual, getting the audience into fits of laughter with his bizarre and excellent lip-synced version of the Queen of the Nights famous aria from the Magic Flute as well as a number which involved about 75-100 pairs of shoes. He is a very present and committed artist, very passionate about what he does, and it serves him well in his presentation. I love his outrageous rainbow eye-lashes and wild, spiky blond hair.

The Von Foxies number was entertaining, however, nothing can compare to their Seattle Grunge act, which they performed at the 2006 Moisture Festival Burlesque Show, which is priceless and involves a striptease of flannel shirts, baggy pants, Starbucks coffee cups, hiking boots and some strategically placed Space Needles, all to the music of Nirvana

Juanny Cash is a teenaged singer and guitarist who was discovered in the Pike Place Market. He sounds exactly like Johnny Cash and you would swear that Cash is channeling through him, it is that uncanny. He performed about six Cash tunes and the audience was amazed at the sound of his voice, especially being a teenager. Johnny Cashs son is going to be producing his CD. The duo, Heavenly Spies, were spirited and had a funny strip act.

Some of the other acts were mildly entertaining but werent quite up to snuff. There were some dance numbers interspersed that felt more like fillers and that were poorly and unimaginatively choreographed, to loud, male, pirate sounding singing recordings, which grew tedious, along with the vague and repetitive movement. There were really no acrobatics to speak of, although they were mentioned in the advertisement as being part of the show. In my opinion, these sluggish, aimless dance numbers should be dropped and some of the great Burlesque acts that are available around Seattle ought to be added to the good acts already involved and utilized to round out the regular performances of the Cabagazm show, to make it more entertaining and give it more substance and professionalism in the future.
