Rx For U.S. Healthcare
New Freeway Hall
July 21

With costs soaring and healthcare, for most of the population, either non-existent or exorbitantly expensive, the subject is certainly something on everyones mind. A room full of people listened to Dr. Susan Williams, the speaker for the program Rx For US Healthcare at New Freeway Hall on Saturday, July 21. She spoke of being a doctor at a Public Hospital in Harlem, and the issues being faced by patients without adequate healthcare in a system that is increasingly becoming more profit oriented.

Also speaking to the possibility of solutions for the broken US healthcare system, Williams offered examples of systems that work, like the one in Cuba, where healthcare has been nationalized since the mid-sixties. And, because of this, even in one of the poorest countries, the average citizen has better healthcare, guaranteed them, than that in the U.S.

After Dr. Williams talk, the film Collateral Damage: Bad Medicine in Tennessee was presented, and gave those present a chance to learn more about the debacle that occurred with when 170,000 people were dropped from from TennCare (the only state funded system to resemble national healthcare thats ever been tried in this country) overnight under the current governor (who promised to fix the system and make it work more efficiently). The film showed several actual patients who had had their quality of care severely hampered when this happened, and some who were still fighting the red tape of a bureaucratic system to try and get adequate coverage back.

When the film was over, audience members gave comments and some true stories of having to deal with loss of services, or never being able to receive healthcare services themselves, or for their relatives. Some people offered solutions and all agreed that what was needed was a total revamping of the healthcare system in this country, to make it less profit-oriented and more concerned with the health of people. The evening ended with good food and stimulating talk on one of the most important subjects facing everyone today.
