| "Reverend Janie Spahr's prophetic ministry is deeply rooted in pastoral concern for those in her care," said Harry Knox, Director of the Human Rights Campaign Religion and Faith Program WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender civil rights organization, responded today to the recent ruling by the Presbyterian Synod of the Pacific. The ruling took a step backward for The Presbyterian Church (USA) by reversing an earlier judicial decision ruling that Reverend Janie Spahr had acted within her rights as a minister in performing marriage ceremonies for same-sex couples. The Synod of the Pacific's ruling reversed the acquittal of Spahr by the Redwoods Presbytery PJC. In response to the Synod of the Pacific's ruling, Harry Knox, Director of the Human Rights Campaign's Religion and Faith Program issued the following comment: "Reverend Janie Spahr's prophetic ministry is deeply rooted in pastoral concern for those in her care. Her life proves that ministry to the real needs of real people matters more than outdated denominational rules. She will not be deterred from her calling to officiate at the union ceremonies of her Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual parishioners and the Human Rights Campaign will continue to stand beside her, More Light Presbyterians and Covenant Network in working for change in the PCUSA."
