Emmy Awards could be golden for Grey's Anatomy, Ugly Betty, and out actors Harris and Knight
Emmy Awards could be golden for Grey's Anatomy, Ugly Betty, and out actors Harris and Knight
by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

Is Boston Legal worthy of its Outstanding Drama Series nomination going into this weekend's Primetime Emmy Awards? No. It pales greatly in comparison to the overlooked, sinfully delicious Rome. Likewise, the much-cheesy Two and a Half Men vies for Outstanding Comedy Series against a more valuable entry, the smart-assed and freshly plotted Entourage. Still, Emmy voters have been known to throw a few surprises, a good reason to watch the awards unfold on Sunday evening (September 16, 8pm on FOX). Additional reasons? Fashion, glitz, Hugh Laurie in a tux, and a pair of openly Gay actors competing for first-time awards, Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) and T.R. Knight (Grey's Anatomy).

Here's a rundown of the major nominees for Sunday's Emmy Awards with predicted winners and personal picks by this year-round TV addict.

EW = Expected Winner, SW = Should Win.

Comedy Series

Entourage
The Office
30 Rock
Two and a Half Men
Ugly Betty

EW: 30 Rock - Based on the TV industry's day-to-day grind, Emmy voters are sure to get every pun intended and relate to 30 Rock profoundly.

SW: Entourage - I won't shed a tear if The Office wins, but HBO's red-hot Entourage is simply irresistible television. The episode where Johnny Drama's beefcake masseur gets the wrong idea about caring for his client's needs is classic.

Drama Series

Boston Legal
Grey's Anatomy
Heroes
House M.D.
The Sopranos

EW: The Sopranos - Unless Emmy voters slept last season, which they've done in previous seasons, they'll let The Sopranos go out with a bang.

SW: Heroes - I loves me some Sopranos, but I wasn't impressed with the show's final run. My pick is the captivating, superpower-themed Heroes with an international, star-rising cast.

Lead Actor, Comedy

Alec Baldwin (30 Rock)
Steve Carell (The Office)
Ricky Gervais (Extras)
Tony Shalhoub (Monk)
Charlie Sheen (Two and a Half Men)

EW: Alec Baldwin - Despite calling his daughter a piggy (or something along those lines), Baldwin has huge support from his Hollywood peeps. Case in point: he won the industry-driven SAG award earlier this year.

SW: Steve Carell - I'm still heartbroken Steve Carell was left off the Oscar ballot for his laugh-out-loud performance in The 40-Year Old Virgin. Let's hope he's recognized for his equally hilarious work in The Office.

Lead Actress, Comedy

America Ferrera (Ugly Betty)
Tina Fey (30 Rock)
Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives)
Julia Louis-Dreyfus (The New Adventures of Old Christine)
Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds)

EW: America Ferrera - With Golden Globe and SAG wins under her belt loops, Ferrera is a lock to win her first Emmy for portraying TV's most adorable geekette.

SW: Mary-Louise Parker - Juggling a pot-growing career and full-time motherhood sure is hard, yet Parker makes it look so easy on Weeds. The Cooking with Jesus episode was a riot.

Supporting Actor, Comedy

Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men)
Kevin Dillon (Entourage)
Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother)
Jeremy Piven (Entourage)
Rainn Wilson (The Office)

EW: Jon Cryer - With the Entourage boys likely to split votes and Cryer starring in an All-American pie series, he's the frontrunner -as unfortunate as that sounds.

SW: Except for the dull Cryer, every nominee is worthy here. I'm pulling for Seattle native Wilson, for being such a huggable, pitiful nerd in The Office.

Supporting Actress, Comedy

Conchata Ferrell (Two and Half Men)
Jenna Fischer (The Office)
Elizabeth Perkins (Weeds)
Jamie Pressly (My Name is Earl)
Holland Taylor (Two and a Half Men)
Vanessa Williams (Ugly Betty)

EW: Vanessa Williams - There is tremendous support out there for Ugly Betty and its beauty queen-to-credible actress Williams.

SW: If Fischer, Perkins or Pressly pull out the victory, I'll be more than happy. But as the cold-as-ice Wilhelmina Slater, it's Williams who deserves to go home with the statuette under her arm.

Lead Actor, Drama

James Gandolfini (The Sopranos)
Hugh Laurie (House M.D.)
Denis Leary (Rescue Me)
James Spader (Boston Legal)
Kiefer Sutherland (24)

EW: James Gandolfini - Anyone else winning this award would be a total shock. But if there is an upset, look for Laurie to race to the podium.

SW: James Gandolfini - Let's face it, Gandolfini can act circles around his fellow nominees many times over. If he doesn't win, consider it a crime.

Lead Actress, Drama

Patricia Arquette (Medium)
Minnie Driver (The Riches)
Edie Falco (The Sopranos)
Sally Field (Brothers & Sisters)
Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit)
Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer)

EW: Edie Falco - Mysteriously ignored in 2006, Falco will be rightfully rewarded this year - even in a crowded field.

SW: Edie Falco - Kudos to Emmy voters for including Driver's saucy work on The Riches, but Falco is in a league of her own.

Supporting Actor, Drama

Michael Emerson (Lost)
Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos)
T.R. Knight (Grey's Anatomy)
Masi Oka (Heroes)
Terry O'Quinn (Lost)

EW: William Shatner - For reasons unknown, Emmy voters are obsessed with the obnoxious, womanizing lawyer Denny Crane, overly acted by Shatner.

SW: Masi Oka - Secretly, I'm pulling for Knight because he'd get the final laugh on Isaiah Washington's anti-Gay remarks. But, I honestly feel Oka stands out from this worthy bunch.

Supporting Actress, Drama

Lorraine Bracco (The Sopranos)
Rachel Griffiths (Brothers & Sisters)
Katherine Heigl (Grey's Anatomy)
Sandra Oh (Grey's Anatomy)
Aida Turturo (The Sopranos)
Chandra Wilson (Grey's Anatomy)

EW: Chandra Wilson - Her SAG win and enthusiastic, inspiring acceptance speech puts Wilson at the front of the pack. A possible spoiler could be Heigl, having won acclaim for her feature film work on Knocked Up.

SW: Sandra Oh - If Wilson or Heigl wins, the champagne will be flowing at mi casa. That said, it's Oh who effortlessly bites into every scene on the Seattle-matted Grey's Anatomy. by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer
