Seattle Gay man shares experience of meeting George Takei

by Kelly Stevens - Special to the SGN

George Takei is famous for portraying Sulu in the Star Trek series and films and recently for the role of Kaito Nakamura in the TV show Heroes. Recently, he visited Seattle for the Seattle Symphony Sci-Fi music shows in late September 2007.

Seattle Frontrunner John Carrington, who is a renowned harpist, met with Takei and shared Frontrunner stories with Takei, whom, in return, shared some personal stories of his own. Takei invited Carrington, his partner Scott McElhose, and friends Tim Murphy and myself backstage after one show to meet with him and his partner, Brad Altman.

Takei is the official announcer for the Howard Stern show on Sirius satellite radio. Carrington told Takei that my conversations were going down hill since listening to Howard Stern. Takei laughed and apologized, but he still enjoys his comedy role on the Howard Stern Show. Sirius is a sponsor of the Gay Games VII and also has channel called OutQ (channel 109), that is all LGBT 24 hours-a-day. Takei has credited Stern for the resurgence in his career.

Takei and Altman met at through the Los Angeles Frontrunners 19 years-ago. Altman was an excellent marathon man and Takei was helped by him in his distance running. Cupid's arrow hit and they eventually started dating and have been in a committed relationship for over 19 years.

Takei did not go to the press about being Gay until October 2005. He was out and about in Los Angeles for years, but had never "come out" about his sexual orientation until then.

Takei and Altman were in Chicago for the 2006 Gay Games. Takei gave a monologue about oppression during the opening ceremonies. He spent years of his childhood in an internment camp for Japanese Americans and he spoke about the oppression of Gay and lesbian people.

Takei also ran Track and Field at Gay Games VII in Chicago. He was part of a mixed relay team that included Seattle Frontrunner Gerry Lewis. Takei joked that he only medaled because he was part of a senior team. The Gay Games motto is participation, inclusion and personal best. People of all ages and abilities can play. He turned 70 in April 2007 and still looks good and fit.

Takei has been a dedicated long-distance runner since his high school cross-country team days. He has completed five 26.2-mile marathons and carried the Olympic Flame in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Torch Relay. He and his life partner are residents of Los Angeles.

Kelly Stevens is the Co-Chair of Team Seattle and a Seattle Frontrunners ?Board Member.
