SEAMEC rejects Renton homophobic candidate
SEAMEC rejects Renton homophobic candidate
In a late election season vote, the Seattle Metropolitan Elections Committee (SEAMEC) steering committee has unanimously voted to give Renton City Council Position #5 Candidate Cheryl Haskins its lowest rating of "ZERO." The rating signifies that the candidate is openly "hostile" to the LGBT community.

Haskins opponent King Parker, a candidate for Renton mayor in 2004, was given a "3" or "meets expectations" rating in the same vote. Neither candidate was interviewed by SEAMEC during the regular primary and general election interviews this year, so the rating was developed on the basis of information SEAMEC obtained about both candidates. Longtime SEAMEC board member and former Co-Chair Herb Krohn stated that Ms. Haskins campaign represents "an attempt by the theocratic forces and anti-Gay church groups to test out an effort to run stealth candidates and buy suburban city council offices."

Haskin's activities through the homophobic "Allies for Marriage and Children" (www.alliesformarriage.org) came to light nationally in the liberal blog "Daily Kos." Her campaign is profiled in a local Web site called www.rentonfacts.com created by Renton activist Kevin Poole. SEAMEC has endorsed candidates in six races and issued ratings on candidate LGBT strength in 15 races across the county.

The full ratings and statements explaining some of the ratings are available online at http://www.seamec.org. SEAMEC has been interviewing and rating candidates for statewide and local office since 1977. The organization is operated primarily by volunteers and accepts donations from the community.
