Outstanding evening of voices against the war at New Freeway Hall
by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid - SGN A&E Writer

Though the threatened windstorm had indeed disrupted power in some areas by the time the program started at New Freeway Hall last Thursday night (October 18th), those gathered didn't let the weather keep them from expressing themselves.Together with a meal fit for a night of blustery winds and rain, and two exciting featured poets, everyone was able to focus instead on the spoken words directed toward protesting the war in Iraq, and the war in general.

Speaking first, Georgia McDade, organizer of the African-American Writers Alliance read anti-war poetry from her two chapbooks, setting the stage for more to come on the subject.

That 'more' at first was offered by writer/poet from New York, Julene T. Weaver, a member of Poet's West, who also read from her own chapbook on the subject of how war affects many segments of society on both sides of the conflict.

After these two excellent speakers, audience members joined the discussion, with some offering works of their own, and comments, later, about what needs to be done in the upcoming election to bring more focus to stopping the war in Iraq and preventing more buildup in that area.

Some people stayed around after the formal program to chat, not a bad way to spend an otherwise dismal, dark evening. For more information on upcoming panels and programs, call 206-722-6057.
