I FEEL FINE
BY ANNEX COMPANY WITH
RACHEL HYNES AND MIKE PHAM
ANNEX THEATRE
THROUGH NOVEMBER 10
If "performance art" is a phrase for things you'd rather not see, then you might want to skip this one. If you're attracted to odd, possibly wise, possibly profound, or possibly not, performances, then you'd like this.
It's an "end of the world" party. It's scripted. Actors know that they are characters. That's very different than improv and clearly the company has worked hard to make this as tight a production as they can. So, it means something to them. It has a point.
I can describe some of what "happens" but that doesn't really tell you much. People get electrocuted after they sing karaoke, but I don't think it's because they're terrible singers. People make food and distribute some to the audience. People change a giant picture of a man into a giant picture of a woman. People change clothes on stage, a lot! I truly could not understand what the significance of the costume changes was, but there were dozens of them. There are nearly naked bodies, for a little titillation. Water drips from plastic bags over champagne glasses, as ice melts within.
If you want to eat, choose a front row or inner isle seat. If you're curious and interested, it's about an hour long, so you might chance it for the experience. If you don't know what performance art is or choose not to find out, then see something more mainstream. For more information, go to www.annextheatre.org or call 206-728-0933.
