Start your holiday shopping on the hill
Start your holiday shopping on the hill
by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid - SGN A&E Writer

Personally, I prefer shopping by catalogue and at funky little out-of-the-way places that often give some of their profits to charity efforts. That being said, I realize that many people enjoy the whole mishmash of shopping with other folks, but prefer it not be in the downtown hubbub. For all of you, I offer a few suggestions here on the Hill where you can often walk to your destination to score some great stuff.

First, do check out Galactica on Pine (just up from downtown), where you can get cool locally-made pillows, candles and other items that'll wow your giftee (and the prices won't make your eyes fall out, either). I'd also wander into Travelers, the store that carries such a grand selection of Indian teas, oils, food and clothing that you might be inspired to book a trip to Mumbai. Nice folks and various Indian lunches on the weekends make this a place to go if you're looking for a truly unique item.

Finally, hit Panache on Broadway if you're looking for poshy clothing for the holidays or little tchotchkes or gifts for a special someone. They have a great selection of soaps, jewelry, and other things everyone should love. Salon Dewi (at 14th and Pine, next to The Globe Café) has some delightful items and you can buy gift certificates for massage or other services for that very special person on your gift list. Last but not least, if you or someone you care about has a mind for spiritual or esoteric matters, Quest Bookstore at the end of Broadway is great place to pick up cards, books and items for those interested in tarot or alternative spiritual practices.
