Top Albums/CDs
by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

Hottest Artists of the Year | Top Albums/CDs | Live Performances | Feature Artist Interview | Singles/Tracks | Worst Music of 2007

Of all the albums released in 2007, here are my picks for the very best - in order.

1. Neon Bible -
Arcade Fire

If you try categorizing Arcade Fire's triumphant second album, you'll be at it for a while. The Montreal-based ensemble, boasting up to eight members who each play multiple instruments, is on a complete other level with Neon Bible. The lyrics, at times poking fun at right-wing yahoos, are clever and modern. Musically, they're all over the map from folk to rock gospel to chamber pop. Hands down, this is 2007's crème de la crème. Best track: "Keep the Car Running"

2. Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga -
Spoon

Austin-based quartet Spoon one-upped themselves with this marvelous disc, where every song is worthy of repeat listens. From the distorted vocals on "The Ghost of You Lingers" to the spunky guitars on "Don't You Evah," this is pop-rock brilliance. Best track: "Rhthm and Soul"

3. Icky Thump -
The White Stripes

Jack White is the Johnny Depp of rock music, an artist unafraid of taking risks and continually marching to the beat of his own strange-yet-genius drum. Once again, Jack and Meg deliver an album that other bands can only dream of making. Best track: "Icky Thump"

4. Because of the Times -
Kings of Leon

Caleb Followill's vocals are so mind-blowing on Kings of Leon's third and most ambitious recording that you almost forget there's music playing in the background, which by the way is also as startling. Why this band isn't more visible is a crying shame. Best track: "Charmer"

5. 100 Days, 100 Nights -
Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings

Soul mama Sharon Jones has been doing her thing for three decades, but just now is drawing mainstream attention. Together with The Dap Kings, the bluesy-voiced Jones unleashes the tigress within on the year's funkiest and silkiest record. Best track: "Let Them Knock"

6. Fort Nightly -
White Rabbits

Packed with talent, this six-piece Brooklyn unit layers rock, big band, pop, bossa nova and everything else they can find under their musical sink. Such a confident album for a new band, and the potential to be even greater is quite evident. Best track: "While We Go Dancing"

7. New Moon -
Elliott Smith

Cohorts of the late Elliott Smith collected unreleased demos of the acclaimed singer-songwriter, most of which were trimmed from previous albums. Virtually untouched, with the exception of simple production, these songs display why he's missed so dearly. Best track: "High Times"

8. Myths of the Near Future -
Klaxons

2007's Mercury Music Prize, the UK's "Album of the Year" award, went to this full-length debut by the preppy-meets-bookworm threesome Klaxons. An exciting mix of guitars, keyboards, percussion and hyper vocals equals a garage punk gem. Best track: "Golden Skans"

9. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend -
Miranda Lambert

Two-time Grammy nominee Miranda Lambert is a tough-talking cowgirl who admits to carrying a loaded weapon at times (with legal permit). On record, she's just as brave - writing about psycho exes and plotting to shoot her abusive boyfriend. Best track: "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend"

10. Couples Therapy -
The Glass

Technically, this is an EP - yet an excellent one masterminded by electronic duo The Glass. These house-punk numbers, seven in total, could exhaust even the most energetic rave-partygoer. Skip the club, and rotate this dynamite CD at home. Best track: "Fourteen Again"

(11-25, in random order): Wincing the Night Away - The Shins, Kala - M.I.A., Rufus Does Judy at Carnegie Hall - Rufus Wainwright, Children Running Through - Patty Griffin, Yours to Keep - Albert Hammond Jr., Back to Black - Amy Winehouse, Graduation - Kanye West, Attack Decay Sustain Release - Simian Mobile Disco, Residente o Visitante - Calle 13, Spring Awakening (2006 Original Broadway Cast) - Duncan Sheik (composer) and Steven Sater (lyricist), Favourite Worst Nightmare - Arctic Monkeys, Sound of Silver - LCD Soundsystem, Good Girl Gone Bad - Rihanna, Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? - Of Montreal, All the Lost Souls - James Blunt
