WEST COAST DEBUT Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War at MOHAI
WEST COAST DEBUT Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War at MOHAI
A provocative exhibit from the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia - Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War - will have its West Coast debut at the Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI) on January 19. The show focuses on three key constitutional crises faced by President Lincoln as he struggled to save the Union : secession, slavery and the suppression of civil liberties.

With a strong interactive component, the Lincoln exhibit strives to challenge visitors to think about how they might have addressed these issues, as well as how the outcomes transformed the nation. Visitors will see artifacts such as the stove pipe hat Lincoln wore to his first inauguration and a signed copy of the Emancipation Proclamation. They will hear actor Sam Waterston deliver a powerful Gettysburg Address and play the authentic board game, "The Secession Game." Additionally, they will discover first-hand accounts of people suspected of disloyalty and jailed, with the chance to decide whether the incarceration was justified.

"We are excited to be the first West Coast venue for this important traveling exhibit," said MOHAI Executive Director Leonard Garfield. "It is a powerful teaching tool for students and it will certainly challenge visitors to examine their own thoughts about this era. We also hope it will generate community discussion about issues still highly relevant today, such as the protection of civil liberties during times of crisis.."

MOHAI has also created a companion exhibit: Blue vs. Gray, the Civil War in the Pacific Northwest , based on new research that reveals fascinating links between the Civil War and life in the Northwest. You'll hear about Charlie Mitchell, the last fugitive slave in Washington Territory and the Knights of the Golden Circle, a secret society with thousands of members encouraging secession.

On February 16, MOHAI will hold a Living History Day, with an authentic Civil War camp on the museum grounds, and the chance to have afternoon tea with President Lincoln himself.

The exhibit runs January 19 - April 20.

MOHAI is located at 2700 24th Ave. E. in Seattle's Montlake neighborhood. The museum is open daily, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., and free on First Thursdays with extended hours till 8 p.m. Free parking. For more information call 206-324-1126 or visit MOHAI's website at www.seattlehistory.org.
