| From Radiohead to kd lang - SGN coverage of the hottest music concerts in 2008 |
by Albert Rodriguez -
SGN A&E Writer
The Seattle Gay News music team is thawing itself out from a bitterly cold winter and a ho-hum holiday concert schedule. The good news, make that great news, is that the upcoming months will deliver some of the hottest names in music right to our Puget Sound doorstep. For previews, reviews and interviews of these shows, stay glued to Seattle Gay News. Here's what is already on our late winter/early spring concert calendars.
RADIOHEAD
DATE AND VENUE TO
BE ANNOUNCED
Critics' darlings and one of rock's finest bands of all-time, Radiohead is including Seattle on its upcoming North American tour itinerary. Tickets are expected to sell out immediately, and they're not playing Portland, so everybody from the Beaver State is coming up here. SGN writer Jessica Browning is a huge fan, so expect a terrific spread on Radiohead's big show in the Jet City closer to the actual date, to be announced soon along with the venue.
RUFUS WAINWRIGHT
PARAMOUNT THEATRE
MARCH 13
Could this be the show we've been waiting for, Rufus Wainwright's redo of Judy Garland's famed Carnegie Hall performance? Possibly. The Gay pop troubadour released the CD-DVD combo of his sold-out Garland recreation in late 2007, replicating the diva's set list song-for-song. Since Wainwright came to Seattle twice last year with barely a whisper of his Carnegie Hall gala, this could finally be it. Tickets, priced at $35 and $45, go on sale January 12.
KD LANG
MOORE THEATRE
MARCH 19-20
Grammy-winning, Lesbian icon kd lang has a two-night stay at the Moore Theatre, and SGN writer Richard Kennedy is all set to go with tickets in hand. The innovative singer-songwriter's previous visit to the Seattle area was a double-bill last summer with Lyle Lovett. This time around, she's the sole headliner. Tickets, priced at $34 and $49, are on sale now via Ticketmaster locations and the Moore Theatre box office.
MARILYN MANSON
PARAMOUNT THEATRE
FEBRUARY 18
Goth-industrial rockers Marilyn Manson return to Seattle next month. Having seen them before, years ago at Key Arena with Hole, I must say their live appearance is unexplainable in words. Stage theatrics, pumped up crowd, trembling sound, lights flashing throughout, and a lead singer whose as entertaining as he is frightening. SGN writer Jessica Browning, a virgin to the Marilyn Manson experience, is in for the shock of her life. Tickets, priced at $36.50 and $46.50, go on sale January 12.
BETTY LAVETTE
DIMITRIOU'S JAZZ ALLEY
MARCH 17-18
You want a diva? Here she is. Grammy-nominated, blues-soul vocalist Bettye LaVette will give you something to talk about in March when she performs back-to-back nights at the intimate Jazz Alley. This woman can sing like no one else I've ever witnessed. She blew away a packed crowd at Bumbershoot in 2005, and she'll do it again this spring. SGN writer Richard Kennedy will tell you just how powerful LaVette's pipes are when he previews her two-night residence in Seattle. Ticket prices not yet available, but visit www.jazzalley.com for details in the coming weeks.
SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO
NEUMO'S
APRIL 24
Seriously, I'm buying new sneakers for this show. I shit you not. I've got eyes on a brand new pair of Pumas for Simian Mobile Disco's upcoming concert at Neumos. The electronic duo, who interviewed with Seattle Gay News last month, are gonna work the sweaty audience with hits like "Sleep Deprivation", "Hot Dog", "It's the Beat" and "Hustler". Tickets, priced at $12, are on sale now at www.neumos.com.
NEW YORK DOLLS
EL CORAZON
MARCH 2
Vintage glam-punk rockers New York Dolls at a hole-in-the-wall venue? Are you kidding us? We're so there. Sounds like a night full of pure excitement, and maybe a bit of debauchery, likely to draw old school gay punks, trannies, and assorted queens. SGN writer Jessica Browning will be there for the action. Tickets, priced at $20 and $25, are on sale now at www.elcorazonseattle.com.
MYSPACE MUSIC
TOUR W/ JUSTICE
THE SHOWBOX
(SODO)
MARCH 24
With each listen of Justice's "Stress" and "D.A.N.C.E.", I lose five pounds just from imagining myself on the dance floor. The Parisian house-funk-techno duo is expected to wear out shoe soles when they land in Seattle this March, headlining MySpace's initial nationwide tour. I can't wait to spin, twirl, and burn some rubber at The Showbox. Tickets for Justice with special guests Diplo and Fancy, priced at $25 and $28, are on sale now at www.showboxonline.com.
JOSE GONZALEZ
THE TRIPLE DOOR
MARCH 29-30
Jose Gonzalez is such a genuine singer-songwriter, your heart bleeds on the spot when you listen to his music in-person. And he's so damn sexy, you'll need extra glasses of water to quench that lustful thirst. The Swedish-born folkie is a must-see at The Triple Door in March, performing two continuous nights with new material and old favorites. Tickets, priced at $22 and $25, are on sale now at www.thetripledoor.net.
SWITCHES
NEUMOS
JANUARY 25
The future looks bright for UK upstarts Switches. Stateside release of their debut Lay Down the Law is scheduled for mid-March. Before that, you can witness why these guys are being touted as the next Franz Ferdinand or The Hives when they open for The Bravery in late January. With catchy songs like "Drama Queen" and "Lovin' It", Switches are punk-pop ear candy. Tickets, priced at $15, are on sale now at www.neumos.com.
