Oscar-nominated music, Foo Fighters, Sasha and John Digweed, & Jack Johnson
by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

The last time I spent an evening with someone named Oscar was, well & never. Come Sunday, I'll be glued to a television set way out in the Pacific awaiting the results of this year's Academy Awards. Similar to Purr here in Seattle, Hula's in Honolulu is hosting an Oscar bash for its Gay, tan-lined, and flip-flop-wearing clientele.

There are two categories worth mentioning relative to music. For Best Original Score, the nominees are Atonement (Dario Marianelli), The Kite Runner (Alberto Iglesias), Michael Clayton (James Newton Howard), Ratatouille (Michael Giacchino), and 3:10 to Yuma (Marco Beltrami). Giacchino won a Grammy for his work, though it does nothing for his Oscar chances because of completely different voting memberships. My guess is that either Marianelli or Iglesias will win, as Academy Award voters usually opt for dramatic scores. For Best Original Song, the nominees are "Falling Slowly" from Once, "Raise It Up" from August Rush, and a trio of numbers from Enchanted - "Happy Working Song," "So Close," and "That's How You Know." In 2007, three songs from Dreamgirls were in the running and all lost to Melissa Etheridge's climate-warming contribution to Al Gore's documentary. I predict the same vote-splitting will again happen, this time benefiting Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova's beautiful track from Once, my personal favorite. "If You Want Me," the most gorgeous Hansard-Irglova song from the film, was erroneously overlooked. Hansard, by the way, is lead singer of Scottish rock band The Frames.

A final music-related note on the Oscars: If you haven't seen Marion Cotillard's performance as Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose, then I suggest renting the DVD before Sunday night's shindig. Cross your fingers she'll pull an upset win for Best Actress over Julie Christie (in a boring performance).

Foo Fighters, seen two weeks ago on the Grammy stage, have announced a nationwide tour that brings them to Key Arena on July 11. The hard rock ensemble, together now for over ten years, received numerous kudos for their latest album, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace. It's not their strongest recording and certainly not better than 1997's double-platinum The Colour and The Shape, which included their best-to-date track "Everlong." No word on supporting acts for the quartet's summer tour, although Jimmy Eat World appears to be a possibility. Foo Fighters are led by former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl. Tickets for the show, priced between $25 and $45, go on sale February 23 (11 a.m.) at all Ticketmaster locations.

Another artist who announced a Seattle tour date this week is Sasha and John Digweed. The well-established British duo is scheduled to appear at The Showbox (SoDo) on April 22, and I smell a sold-out performance. These guys are responsible for some of the most incredible dance music of the past decade - individually they're amazing, and as a twosome they're mindblowing. Sasha and John Digweed haven't performed collectively in Seattle since 2002, and I'm sure fans are eager to experience these high-energy-packed DJs in person. I expect a solid batch of Gay house-electronica followers to be in attendance. Tickets for Sasha and John Digweed, priced at $30, go on sale February 27 (10 a.m.) at all Ticketmaster locations. Jack Johnson fan? If so, write down this date and circle it on your calendar: August 22. The Hawaiian pop-reggae star is set to perform at The Gorge Amphitheatre on this date, smack in the middle of summer. Tickets are likely to go on sale in March, if not sooner. Johnson joins Seattle-based artist Dave Matthews at Oahu's Waikiki Shell for the 2008 Kokua Festival on April 19-20. Other musicians on the lineup are Mason Jennings, Paula Fuga, Go Jimmy Go and Matthews' duet partner Tim Reynolds.

Issaquah-based Modest Mouse will join R.E.M. for a series of dates, which could include an appearance at Sasquatch. Nothing confirmed, though I'd be surprised if it doesn't happen.

Matt Costa had tour gear stolen from his van in Canada. $25,000 worth of equipment and instruments was taken from a storage unit near his hotel in Winnipeg. Fortunately, Costa is raking in the big bucks with a nearly sold-out tour and concert dates with none other than Jack Johnson in Japan and New Zealand. I'm still working on getting Costa to interview with Seattle Gay News in the coming months. Remind me to ask him what his shoe size is.

Finally - and along the lines of shoe sizes - the lead singer of a certain local up-and-coming group told me and my friends, minutes after his band performed to a packed house, that he has a very large penis. Out of the blue, he said it just like that. Interestingly, one of Snow Patrol's band members told me the exact same thing a couple years back. Gotta love them rock stars!
