SGN A&E Writer THE RAVEONETTES W/ BE YOUR OWN PET SUNDAY, MARCH 9 - 8 PM NEUMOS - $12 The Raveonettes are hands-down one of the best new artists to come along in the musically ravaged '00s, and that's no exaggeration. Their brand of fuzzed-out, Spector-esque delinquent pop is so irresistible, I never grow tired of them. I've seen them perform several times, as a fully electric group and stripped down to a streamlined duo. Any way they choose to play, they're inspiring and always perform their black little hearts out. This week's appearance at Neumos will be no exception. Danish Sune Rose Wagner (guitar, vocals) and Sharin Foo (bass, vocals) expertly deliver dreamy two-part vocal harmonies inspired by Buddy Holly and The Ronettes (hence the hybrid band name). Yet The Raveonettes are far from being a retro one-trick pony. What they're able to capture is the essence of those classic influences, filtered through equal parts of modern dissonance. Their trademark sound isn't far from The Jesus & Mary Chain with a lighter side or The Ramones at their most bubblegum. The past is referenced only as a means to an end. Stories of love and teenage rebellion, harmonies to die for - it's a whole new way to make precocious and oh-so-cool pop gems. They have an aesthetic, and they're quite at home in it - think Marlon Brando in The Wild One. It's an atmosphere that is close to my heart. Their brand-new full-length Lust Lust Lust is brimming with sweet melodies, crackly guitar washes, and perfectly punctuated by occasional handclaps or tambourine. They just don't make rock bands like this anymore, and that's a crying shame. Expect to see Velvet Underground, Buddy Holly, and Dandy Warhols aficionados out in droves. The Raveonettes' following features an ample sprinkling of diva-worshipping guys and girls infatuated with slinky blonde Sharin Foo, and equally devoted fans taken with William Reid lookalike Sune Rose Wagner. The two are always gracious and friendly to their live audience, never aloof (as their image might suggest). The high-energy new material will bring the crowds; the album is not so much a departure from 2005's subdued Pretty In Black, but more of a return to form. "You Want the Candy" is a standout tune guaranteed to get some hips shaking. They're inspiring and will make you wish the night could go on forever. As of this writing, tickets are still available, but most dates on the recently kicked-off US tour are sellouts already. Don't miss a chance to see The Raveonettes before they hit it big. Artist essentials: "You Want the Candy" from Lust Lust Lust is fantastic, and "Aly, Walk with Me" is another haunting highlight. |
