Sixth annual Gender Odyssey Transgender Conference
Sixth annual Gender Odyssey Transgender Conference
Gender Odyssey announces its sixth annual conference for Transgender and all gender-variant people, their families, loved ones and health care providers at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in Seattle, Washington, Saturday, August 30 to Monday, September 1. In addition to 70 workshops and facilitated discussions, Gender Odyssey offers the larger Transgender community a wealth of social and entertainment events, many which are free and open to the public.

Workshops at the Gender Odyssey conference include presentations by two South African gender activists, Liesl Theron and Tebogo Nkoana, whose work is the only organized Transgender civil rights group on the continent. This year's plenary speaker, which is open to the general public, will be given by author and poet Eli Clare whose books include Exile and Pride: Disability, Queerness and Liberation and a book of poetry, The Marrow's Telling: Words in Motion. Additional workshops include topics of interest to older and post-transition people; legal and civil rights issues; those in the beginning or just considering transition and more.

Conference events include a special one-day provider's seminar by national gender specialist and author of the book The Transgender Child: A Handbook for Professionals and Families, Stephanie Brill, on Friday, August 29, 2008 with CEU credits available. Receptions include people of color, youth, and Gay men. Live form London is a special theatre performance by artist Lazlo Pearlman, director of the documentary Unhung Heroes, called Madame Pierre's Other Tongue, a look at language and gender in French, English and German, at the Broadway Performance Hall Saturday, August 30, 2008. Tickets are available at Brown Paper Tickets and Ticket Window. Sunday, August 31st brings a phenomenal BBQ, also open to the public and a Play Party open to conference attendees only.

Gender Odyssey is produced in conjunction with the Gender Spectrum Family conference, the nation's only conference for families of gender-variant youth and children. Both conferences are held Labor Day weekend at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center. Registration to the family conference is separate from Gender Odyssey. Workshops at the family conference include presentations by Shannon Minter, legal director at the NCLR; Beth Reis from Seattle's Safe Schools Coalition; and both Michele Angello and Diane Ehrensaft, leading psychotherapists who specialize in work with gender-variant children and their families. Recreational and social events will include two family brunches, a pizza and pool party for kids, and a day camp filled with fun and activity.

Gender Spectrum is a national education, consulting, and training organization promoting the welfare and understanding of Transgender and gender variant people of all ages, especially children. In addition to the Gender Spectrum Family conference, Gender Spectrum also produces Gender Odyssey, a conference for Transgender adults. Gender Spectrum maintains two of the nation's only support groups for families of gender variant and transgender children in conjunction with Children's Hospital & Research Centers in Oakland, California and Seattle, Washington.
