Seattle zombies set record at 'Red, White, and Undead'

by Anthony Greer - SGN Staff Writer

On July 2, 4,522 bloodthirsty miscreants staggered together to set a Guinness world record for having the most zombies in one place during the Fremont Zombie Walk.

Last year, Fremont was declared the 'Dead Center of the Universe' and set the record for the 'Largest Zombie Walk on the Planet,' only to have the title stolen by New Jersey, where 4,093 brain-eaters of the undead East lurched into the record books on the day before Halloween. In response to this, advertising for this years' playful bloodfest was geared toward reclaiming the title and included a Facebook group with 4,400+ members and a comical 'Red, White, and Dead' YouTube trailer.

In order to be considered one of the 4,522 world record achievers, you had to pay the $5 admission fee and get your picture taken as proof that you were at the event as one of the undead. According to sponsors, there were actually an estimated 7,000-7,500 participants in the walk (and one Tranny who showed up to her friend's house three hours late and didn't have time to get her make-up did).

The zombies themselves were of wide variety. Along with the classic blood-splattered corpses, undead brides, and zombie hunters with chunks taken out of them were an undead Mario and Luigi, zombie robots, and an undead Gumby. There was also a particularly famished zombie who decided to bring a brain to eat with him while on the walk.

There were also several food carts for those who preferred a cerebrum-free dinner, and a beer garden to assist zombies in their stagger swagger. The proceeds from the beer garden were donated to the Fremont Arts Council.

The gates to the event itself opened at 2 p.m., and throughout the day several bands including the Staxx Brothers and Kulture Shock performed in 'Rock the Block,' Seattle's newest outdoor music concert. The walk itself was scheduled to start at 6 p.m., but due to an excess of people still in the admissions line it was pushed back to 7 p.m.

After the walk concluded, the Rat City Roller Girls were guest judges for the costume contest, where the best and most creative zombies were rewarded.

The event was a success. It reclaimed the record from New Jersey, and now the flesh-rotting, blood-gushing growlers and grunters who made up the 'Red, White, and Dead' Fremont zombie walk will have a new number next year to sink their teeth into.
